Tharavad Archive, Amettikkara

We documented a 300 year old Tharavad in Kerala that belongs to the Namboothiri patriarchal clan. It sits on large plot of land with many ancillary buildings. The relationship between the house form and culture was explored through drawings with students from Nirma University. The goal was to identify relationships between architecture and everyday rituals of the past and present. We noticed that the type of house within the caste, responds to auspiciousness, ritual, gender biases, response to outsiders and caste hierarchy. Here architecture becomes an embodiment of behavioural aspects of a society, for Malayali Hindus.
