“You say to a brick, 'What do you want, brick? ‘And brick says to you, 'I like an arch. ‘And you say to brick, 'Look, I want one, too, but arches are expensive and I can use a concrete lintel.

‘And then you say: 'What do you think of that, brick?” - By Louis Kahn

The studio began by understanding the language of materials, and how to listen to them; Toying with the materials, students soon realized they did not speak the spoken word but to action. As if an infant sees this object for the first time a push, a pull, a twist, bend, stack, or crush, brings about different responses!

Familiarising, they begin to notice the characteristics, strengths, and weaknesses of a material when put through forces by hand. Soon by the time we realize they are having adept conversations and working with a system that points towards its strength and weakness, where is it stable, where did it break from?; we introduce them to the exercise to glorify and push the material to its limits and bring grace – Light & Highlight! The ingredients given were spaghetti and Plaster of Paris (PoP) (spaghetti interpretative of linear form and PoP as solid / mass)

Two weeks of conversation with Spaghetti and PoP have opened up students to understand how materials can be processed and result in interesting forms. The intention was to accentuate the inherent properties of materials. The studio explores the material and its characteristics as one of the prime principles to arrive at architectural language wherein Architecture is dictated by the material characteristics and construction systems. The narrative is addressed not just by the materials chosen but also by how different materials come together, the relationship with the ground, and the details that are integral to achieving the intent.
